FINDING THE RIGHT SOLUTION
How to choose the right compressor
The choice of a compressor is not determined solely by the power of the motor. The key factors are, above all, the required volumetric flow rate, the operating pressure, the load profile, the daily operating hours and the required compressed air quality. Installation conditions, noise requirements, scope for expansion and the total life-cycle costs should also be considered in the design.
Important information for the design:
Required volumetric flow rate and maximum operating pressure
Base load, peak load and fluctuations in compressed air demand
Operating hours, shift pattern and expected utilisation rate
Required compressed air quality and purity class
Ambient temperature, installation location, ventilation and sound insulation
Existing treatment, control systems, pipework and storage capacity
Planned expansions and requirements regarding redundancy or availability
Correctly determining volumetric flow rate, pressure and power reserve
The volumetric flow rate should be calculated on the basis of the actual consumption of all connected consumers and their load profile over time. The operating pressure is determined by the pressure required at the consumer, taking into account realistic pressure losses in the system. Spare output capacity should make allowance for foreseeable expansion and peaks in consumption, but should be selected in such a way as to avoid unnecessary oversizing. For existing systems, a compressed air demand analysis will provide the most reliable data.
